1945 Diary of Joseph Madigan

Monday 1 January 1945: 5th day of 3rd Br Div working at Venray and Overloon and saw 5 MEs shot down. Received New Years cards from Kitty and Aggie. Wrote to Peg.

Tuesday 2 January 1945:  Received two letters and snaps from Peg, also letter from Aggie. Rough night shelling by Jerry. Out at Oploo on Lines.

Wednesday 3 January 1945:  Out again at Oploo in the Rain, wrote to Peg and Maureen. 8th Brigade attacked over the Maas. Still at 3 BR Div.

Thursday 4 January 1945: Recieved this calender from Peg and a letter. Wrote to Mr Duggan and Aunt. More shells over the position, its getting too hot here. Chin up!.

Friday 5 January 1945: Still at 3 Div. Tried to write to Peg, but I spent all the evening in a slit trench.

Saterday 6 January 1945: Left 3rd Div today arrived back at wagon lines. Wrote to Peg had a good sleep for a change.

Sunday 7 January 1945: Reeled line in Deurne. Received two letter from Peg.

Monday 8 January 1945: Left wagon lines fro gun position at Oirlo near Venray wrote to my wife. Billeted on a very nice family. Snowing

Tuesday 9 January 1945:  At Oirlo, snowing again all day. Went to Levenum, south of Venray, with cinema party to see "Beautiful  Cheat". Legg went on leave, and Tony Morris.

Wednesday 10 January 1945: Wrote letter to my wife, and got one from Aggie. Getting colder every minute.

Thursday 11 January 1945: O n the OP at Blerick. A little mortaring during the evening, a very very vold night. Jerry was quiet. Finished off a letter to Peg. All mail held up owing to the weather.

Friday 12 January 1945: Returned from OP at 4 0'clock. Sinton had a bid of bad luck with a fire. Had a wash and shave and retired early, last night tired me out.

Saterday 13 January 1945: Nothing to report. Preparing to move to new position. At 8 O'Clock lines went dis. Stopped me from writing.

Memoranda: lost Jackknife and Lanyard.

Sunday 14 January 1945:  Moved today to Weert. Busy all day wiring up new position. finished at 11 O'Clock.

Monday 15 January 1945:  Went to Weert to see ENSA show. Received letter from Peg. Must write tomorrow.

Tuesday 16 January 1945:  Called out at 6 o/c AM. Lines dis and wireless u/s. Attack on the Salient went in. Finally got time to write my wife. Very cold.

Wednesday 17 January 1945: Went to baths at Weert. Out on a dis line again. Our bombers over. Very cold again.
